Dezell Tom Dezell,Tom Dezell: Networking for the Novice, Nervous, or Naive Job Seeker

Networking for the Novice, Nervous, or Naive Job Seeker

Description

The advice is consistent -- Networking is key to any job search! The statistics are encouraging -- nearly 80% of job openings are never advertised and more than two thirds of candidates get a job through networking. The bottom line is discouraging -- the majority of job seekers spend most of their job search time sitting at their computer navigating through various employment sites and responding to advertised openings. Why? In a nutshell-- fear. Fear of rejection, fear of the unknown and fear of trying things out of your normal comfort zone. Combine that with a lack of understanding of how networking works during the hiring process and it becomes easy to see why the job candidate finds a greater comfort level behind their computer screen. But, this strategy only exposes them to a limited number of opportunities and since all job seekers use the classifieds and job boards, they face the highest level of competition. The best news of all is that you can benefit from networking during your job search. Networking can provide the foundation for your job search, support each area of your search and also provide you with opportunities to expand your horizons throughout your career.

: A Strategy Guide" demonstrates the power of this new paradigm by examining how: Flickr, a classic user-driven business, created value for itself by helping users create their own value; Google made money with a model based on free search, and changed the rules for doing business on the Web-opening opportunities you can take advantage of; social network effects can support a business-ever wonder how FaceBook grew so quickly?; and, businesses like Amazon tap into the Web as a Networking for the Novice, Nervous, or Naive Job Seeker ebook pdf source of indirect revenue, using creative new approaches to monetize the investments they've made in the Web. The Secret History of Emotion : From Aristotle's Rhetoric to Modern Brain Science download ebook

Daniel M. Gross: The Secret History of Emotion : From Aristotle's Rhetoric to Modern Brain Science

The Secret History of Emotion : From Aristotle's Rhetoric to Modern Brain Science

Description

Through a radical rereading of Aristotle, Seneca, Thomas Hobbes, Sarah Fielding, and Judith Butler, among others, Daniel Gross' "The Secret History of Emotion" reveals a persistent intellectual current that considers emotions as psychosocial phenomena. The Roman Stoics, for instance, offer insight into the reasons why political passions are distributed to some people but not to others. Contemporary theorists such as Judith Butler, meanwhile, explain to us how psyches are shaped by power. To supplement his argument, Gross also provides a history and critique of the dominant modern view of emotions, expressed in Darwinism and neurobiology, in which they are considered organic, personal feelings independent of social circumstances. The result is a convincing work that rescues the study of the passions from science and returns it to the humanities and the art of rhetoric. "The Secret History of Emotion" offers a counterpoint to the way we generally understand emotions today.

Advice for New Faculty Members: Nihil Nimus is a unique and essential guide to the start of a successful academic career. As its title suggests (nothing in excess), it advocates moderation in ways of working, based on the single-most reliable difference between new faculty who thrive and those who struggle. By following its practical, easy-to-use rules, novice faculty can learn to teach with the highest levels of student approval, involvement, and comprehension, with only modest preparation times and a greater reliance on spontaneity and student participation. Similarly, new faculty can use its rule-based practices to write with ease, increasing productivity, creativity, and publishability through brief, daily sessions of focused and relaxed work. And they can socialize more successfully by learning about often-misunderstood aspects of academic culture, including mentoring. Each The Secret History of Emotion : From Aristotle's Rhetoric to Modern Brain Science download ebook pdf rule in Advice for New Faculty Members has been tested on hundreds of new faculty and proven effective over the long run -- even in attaining permanent appointment.

Happiness Around the World : The paradox of happy peasants and miserable millionaires pdf

Carol L. Graham: Happiness Around the World : The paradox of happy peasants and miserable millionaires

Happiness Around the World : The paradox of happy peasants and miserable millionaires

Description

For centuries the pursuit of happiness was the preserve of either the philosopher or the voluptuary and took second place to the basic need to survive on the one hand, and the pressure to conform to social conventions and morality on the other. More recently there is a burgeoning interest in the study of happiness, in the social sciences and in the media. Can we really answer the question what makes people happy? Is it really grounded in credible methods and data? Is there consistency in the determinants of happiness across countries and cultures? Are happiness levels innate to individuals or can policy and the environment make a difference? How is happiness affected by poverty? By economic progress? Is happiness a viable objective for policy? This book is an attempt to answer these questions, based on research on the determinants of happiness in countries around the world, ranging from Peru and Russia to the U.S. and Afghanistan. The book reviews the theory and concepts of happiness, explaining how these concepts underpin a line of research which is both an attempt to understand the determinants of happiness and a tool for understanding the effects of a host of phenomena on human well being. The research finds surprising consistency in the determinants of happiness across levels of development. Yet there is still much debate over the relationship between happiness and income. The book explores the effects of many mediating factors in that relationship, ranging from macroeconomic trends and democracy to inequality and crime. It also reviews what we know about happiness and health and how that relationship varies according to income levels and health status. It concludes by discussing the potential - and the potential pitfalls - of using happiness surveys to contribute to better public policy.

Computational Science - ICCS 2002 : International Conference Amsterdam, The Netherlands, April 21-24, 2002 Proceedings, Part II

Description

Computational Science is the scienti?c discipline that aims at the development and understanding of new computational methods and techniques to model and simulate complex systems. The area of application includes natural systems - such as biology, envir- mental and geo-sciences, physics, and chemistry - and synthetic systems such as electronics and ?nancial and economic systems. The discipline is a bridge b- ween `classical' computer science - logic, complexity, architecture, algorithms - mathematics, and the use of computers in the aforementioned areas. The relevance for society stems from the numerous challenges that exist in the various science and engineering disciplines, which can be tackled by advances made in this ?eld. For instance new models and methods to study environmental issues like the quality of air, water, and soil, and weather and climate predictions through simulations, as well as the simulation-supported development of cars, airplanes, and medical and transport systems etc. Paraphrasing R. Kenway (R.D. Kenway, Contemporary Physics. 1994): `There is an important message to scientists, politicians, and industrialists: in the future science, the best industrial design and manufacture, the greatest medical progress, and the most accurate environmental monitoring and forecasting will be done by countries that most rapidly exploit the full potential ofcomputational science'. Nowadays we have access to high-end computer architectures and a large range of computing environments, mainly as a consequence of the enormous s- mulus from the various international programs on advanced computing, e.g.

Description

This popular textbook gives a clear account of the principles of the main statistical methods used in modern analytical laboratories. Such methods underpin high quality analyses in areas such as the safety of food, water and medicines, environmental monitoring, and chemical manufacturing. There are numerous worked examples, including the use of Microsoft Excel and Minitab, and a large number of student exercises, many of them based on examples from the analytical literature.

Exposure and Response (Ritual) Prevention for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Therapist Guide

Description

An estimated 2-3% of the population is affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is a chronic condition that significantly affects daily functioning and quality of life. Many people with OCD would greatly benefit from receiving professional help to learn how to successfully manage this debilitating condition. This book guides clinicians in treating individuals with OCD through the use of exposure and ritual (response) prevention, one of the most effective and the most studied treatments for OCD. Designed to be used in conjunction with its companion patient workbook titled Treating Your OCD with Exposure and Ritual (Response) Prevention Therapy, this Therapist Guide includes supporting theoretical, historical and research background information, diagnostic descriptions, differential diagnoses, session by session treatment outlines, case examples, sample dialogues, practice assignments, and tailored application to the vast variety of presentations and nuances of the disorder. The manual contains the 'nuts and bolts' of how to provide the treatment and is a comprehensive resource for therapists. It is an invaluable guide for clinicians in overcoming the barriers and difficulties that are part and parcel of every treatment. "Exposure and ritual (response) prevention (EX/RP) is the best treatment we have for obsessive compulsive disorder. The Therapist Guide and Workbook by Foa, Yadin, and Licher will do two very important things. The first is to make EX/RP much more available to people suffering from OCD. The second is to help ensure that the treatment that is made more available is a treatment that should really work."-Michael R. Liebowitz M.D., Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University and Former Director, Anxiety Disorders Clinic, New York State Psychiatric Institute "In this well-organized and succinct manual, leading experts describe exposure and ritual (response) prevention (EX/RP), a proven first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). They detail how to evaluate clients for EX/RP treatment, provide session-by-session instructions for treatment delivery, and offer invaluable advice on handling problems like patient nonadherence. This outstanding therapist manual, together with its accompanying client workbook, provides state-of-the-art tools for transforming the lives of people with OCD."-H. Blair Simpson, M.D. Ph.D., Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and the OCD Research Program at the New York State Psychiatric Institute "A concise, up-to-date, and extremely useful clinical guide to understanding and treating people struggling with OCD. State-of-the-art essentials for how to provide the most effective intervention for this often difficult to treat condition are covered in a clear and practical manner that is certain to facilitate positive outcomes."-Jonathan S. Abramowitz, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor of Psychology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders

Mike Cronin,Mark Duncan,Paul Rouse: The GAA: County by County

The GAA: County by County

Description

People and place, sport and identity are at the heart of this book, telling the story of how the GAA has left a unique imprint on every Irish county and Irish communities overseas. Organised county by county, the highs and lows of on-field activity are charted and the various forces that have shaped the personality of the GAA across each county - social, economic, geographic and political - are examined. With a compelling mix of text, images and first-hand accounts from participants in the GAA Oral History project, this is a seamless blend of the scholarly and the popular, providing fascinating insights into why the GAA has developed as it has in different places. The second major publication after The GAA - A People's History from the team behind the GAA Oral History Project, this is a book to treasure and keep.

The play begins with Max and Charlotte, a couple whose marriage seems about to rupture. But nothing one sees on a stage is the real thing, and some things are less real than others. Charlotte is an actress who has been appearing in a play about marriage written by her husband Henry. Max, her leading man, is also married to an actress, Annie. Both marriages are at the point of rupture because Henry and Annie have fallen in love. But is it the real thing? The Real Thing was first performed at the Strand Theatre, London, on 16 November 1982. "I want my wines to tell a good story. I want them natural and most of all, like my dear friends, I want them to speak the truth even if we argue, says Alice Feiring. Join her as she sets off on her one-woman crusade against the tyranny of homogenization, wine consultants, and, of course, the 100-point scoring system of a certain all-powerful wine writer. Traveling through the ancient vineyards of the Loire and Champagne, to Piedmont and Spain, she goes in search of authentic barolo, the last old-style rioja, and the tastiest new terroir-driven champagnes. She reveals just what goes into the average bottle the reverse osmosis, The GAA: County by County download epub the yeasts and enzymes, the sawdust and oak chips and why she doesn t find much to drink in California. And she introduces rebel winemakers who are embracing old-fashioned techniques and making wines with individuality and soul. No matter what your palate, travel the wine world with Feiring and you ll have to ask yourself: What do i really want in my glass?"
